"the dark" and "the smoking eye"

The dark and the smoking eye were two phrases which the party heard from the boatman in Bhal-Hamatugn. He reapeated them several times, uttering nonsense phrases like:

Seek ye, the smoking eye?

or:

Many come from the dark, seeking the dark in the dark were it is dark... very dark

A kuo-toan soldier who was intimidated into pointing the way to Zenith refered to him as "The Smoking Eye", or at least to something upstairs in the shrine.
