The 4th edition of the Dungeons & Dragons system has been announced at GenCon this year. Dungeons & Dragons has been around a long time, and this will be its 5th published edition (called 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3.5th and now 4th). I've owned and played every edition so far, and I'll probably own 4th at some point, so now is probably a good time to find out what it's all about.

The announcement

On August 15, 2007, Wizards of the Coast announced 4th edition at a special media dinner at GenCon. The next day, they made the announcement to the general public. The game will support levels 1-30, rather than 1-20 in the core rules, and the release schedule will be as follows:

  • May 2008, Player's Handbook
  • June 2008, Monster Manual
  • July 2008, Dungeon Master's Guide

The fate of the magazines

Dragon and Dungeon magazines will be included in a larger online subscription service called D&D Insider, which will be part of the 4th edition.

More to come...

I'll be adding to this article as I absorb the events over the next few weeks.
