Relationship to orcs

Orcs are often associated with Goblins, and although neither race's origins are completely understood, it is almost certain that they are more closely related than orcs are to the other races of the Flanaess. In most circumstances, social interactions between orcs and goblins are orc-dominant, based mostly on the superior physical stature of the orcs. However, goblins tend to be craftier than orcs, and in many circumstances have been able to gain a temporary or prolonged upper hand.

Relationship to men

Humans and the various demi-human races rarely interact socially with the goblins, but in some places, especially on the borders of "civilization", goblins are common house slaves. In some cases, they have even achived the status of free pesant. No goblin has ever been known to hold a notable position in the societies of men, though.

Tribes

The primary tribal divisions of goblins are geographic. Extreme northern and southern goblins are rarer, and far outnumbered by their orcish counterparts.

In the central Flanaess, there are dozens, perhaps even hundreds of tribes of goblins. Those which play a particularly significant role are:

  • Ak'tachuk: This band of particularly bloodthirsty goblins live in the border lands between Dreadwood and the Hool Marshes in Keoland. They speak a fragmented variant of the goblin common tongue, mixed with Keoish. Often banding together with weaker tribes to make raids against villages and outposts of men and the demi-humans, these are some of the most prosperous goblins in the Flanaess.
  • Madfists: The name, Madfists, actually refers to a specific goblin who is rumored to be immortal, though this claim has never been substantiated. The Madfist goblins are nomadic, ranging from the Nyr Dyv, north and west through the Empire of Iuz and beyond. They have informal ties with many of the more permanently established goblin tribes in between, and are at war with several others.
  • The Litany of Pain: This is not a true tribe, but a power structure through which the lesser goblinoids interact with the leadership of the Pomarj. The original tribe has since been diluted to the point that it is indistinct. The various tribes of the Pomarj serve a variety of roles including the exceptional Globlin Engineers of the Drachensgrabs whose cunning in stonemasonry is matched only by their sadism in trap design. However, most Pomarj goblins are either independant or slaves to the orcish masters of the empire.
  • Of Stench and Smell: This group of goblins are the best known and most powerful of those inhabiting the Gnarley Forest. They use and cultivate their foul smell as a weapon in battle. Once per year, at the height of summer, the Goblins of the Gnarley Forest gather in congress to disucss their various wars and feuds (both internal and external). Occasionally this can lead to open conflict, or even (poorly coordinated) attacks on the nearby cities of Verbobonc and Dyvers. For this reason, the Gnarley Rangers attempt to track the goblins to this gathering and disrupt it. For no known reason, this effort almost always fails....

Goblinaragard

A rumored goblin city in the Corusks, Goblinaragard is supposed to have been a city of dwarves before it fell to the Goblins. How true this is is unknown. The Corusk mountains are known to be one of the more common places in the northlands that goblins live, but no account of the city has yet been verified.
