Theory on the perfect anthology

My Theory on the perfect anthology is a show concept (nothing proprietary, fear not), loosely outlined as such:

A one-hour anthology show where each week either one or two installments air, each written by a well-known industry writer or director who gives a short, 1-2 minute teaser intro, and then proceeds to do whatever it is that they would like to see, themselves (perhaps with an eye to doing things that they were not allowed to do in an existing show).

Change the names of popular shows, file off the serial numbers, and do a one hour or half-hour "insiders view" of a popular or never-aired show. A sort of scream therapy for Hollywood writers. It's like the Saturday Night Live sketches that lampoon TV shows and movies, only that's the whole show and you get celebrity writers and directors.

Of course, this idea presupposes that you could keep executives from watering it down and forcing writers to write the same least-common denominator stories that made them frustrated in the first place. The good news is that if that happens, it would be obvious: no one worth the trouble is going to want to be the cameo writer for a show that won't let them write something they're proud of.

Just a thought. -Aaron Sherman
