The Underdark is a network of caverns, rivers and other subterranian features below the Flanaess. The extent of the Underdark and the population of its cavernous communities is a matter of some debate, but this much is asserted with relative authority: somewhere below the Hellfurnace Mountains lies an extensive, drow-lead city and surrounding caves and complexes.
Of course, there are stories of entrances to the Underdark from nearly every city in the Flanaess, but such rumors are unlikely to be true, as that would suggest a massive network of tunnels that extend for hundreds, even thousands of miles.
